Poster of a female bareback rider on a galloping white horse under the big top, framed on a wall

Bouglione, Medrano, Fernando, Pinder. There was a time when every great French circus family had its advertising column, its star bareback rider and its official illustrator. The circus posters of that era did more than announce the show: they told its story, in Art Deco flat colors and monumental typography.

From 1880 to 1940, posters lithographed by Chéret and later Cassandre defined a visual grammar that still speaks to us today. Acrobats mid-leap, lion tamers, white-faced clowns in makeup: each figure becomes the icon of a scene you can only see at the circus.

Our selection recreates this Belle Époque spirit with rigor. Balanced compositions, striped big tops in red, cream and midnight blue, original illustrations that are never clichéd. Frame them in a patinated wood or matte black metal frame to stay true to the originals.

Circus posters, big tops and the Belle Époque

The golden age of the French circus runs from 1900 to 1940, when Paris saw the Médrano, Cirque d’Hiver and Pinder circuses parade through. The advertising posters of this period created a unique iconography: red and white big tops, lion tamers in fitted costumes, female riders in tutus, lions and elephants shown with dignity. Today, these posters make for sophisticated Belle Époque interiors.

The golden age of Belle Époque big tops (1900-1930)

The circus enjoyed its golden age in France between 1900 and 1930. Bouglione, Pinder, Medrano and Amar set up their big tops in regional capitals every summer. The advertising posters of the time were the engine of this industry: large lithographed formats, saturated red-gold-black colors, hand-drawn lettering.

Emblematic figures: acrobats and trapeze artists

The posters feature the stars of the circus: trapeze artists in heavy costumes, bareback riders, tightrope walkers, jugglers. These stylized characters became graphic icons. Our collection brings them back in the original visual grammar, with a circus red-gold-black-white palette.

Lion tamers and animal acts

Lions, elephants, horses, bears: animal acts were the big attraction under the big top. The posters showcase them in heroic compositions. Today these images are valued above all for their graphic power and historical interest. For an office, living room or hallway.

Clowns and their graphic poetry

Auguste, the white-faced clown, Pierrot lunaire: clowns offer a rich graphic typology. Colorful costumes, stylized makeup, melancholy or laughing eyes. These posters are more poetic and less spectacular, with a red-blue-white-yellow palette.

The return of vintage circus in decor

For the past 10 years, vintage circus has been making a strong comeback in decor: saturated palette, hand lettering, theatrical subjects. It is especially well suited to children’s rooms (without frightening anyone), entryways and bold living rooms. Our circus collection favors gentle scenes: bareback riders, clowns, acrobats, and animals shown without cruelty, like juggling sea lions or the elephant kneeling under the big top.

Which room for a circus poster

In an entryway or hallway, a circus poster sets the tone from the moment you arrive without taking over an everyday living wall. In a living room, it works better as a single piece than as a multiple, so as not to overload a room already full of furniture. In an older child’s or teenager’s room, choose acrobat and clown subjects over animal acts, which are visually gentler. Avoid the bathroom and the kitchen: humidity and splashes quickly damage a gilded frame or a thin molding.

Creating a circus wall without going childish

The pitfall: too many colors, too many characters. The rule: limit it to 3 posters, with a dominant red-gold-black palette and an identical size. Ideal as a vertical triptych of 3 A3 portrait posters above a dresser or as a horizontal frieze in a hallway.

Vintage circus is particularly suited to rooms with high ceilings (Parisian Haussmann style) where the subject finds its height. For standard rooms, favor clean compositions in a triptych.
